Hello and welcome,
In this series I pick 5 completely random songs across many genres and review them for you. I use a star rating system with 5 being amazing and 0.25 being the worst song ever. This is based mostly on my personal taste and whether I’d listen to it in my day to day life, while lyrics do play a part they aren’t very important to me.
Only a Fool by Galantis
It has a nice groovy vibe to it while listening. The build up works out nicely into the chorus. However this feels like an incredibly average song and is very repetitive, so I’m not super into it. I can’t see myself listening to this actively. Maybe in the background but this would get completely buried and I’d 100% skip it when it comes up against my other songs.
I’ll give it a 1.5 star rating. Not the worst song, and I can see what they were trying to do but it wasn’t executed the best. It’s also not my style of music so perhaps I’m a bit biased.
Little Dark Age by MGMT
It has a nice beat to it which is unexpected for such a strange song. I did not enjoy these vocal effects though. This is 100% not a song I would listen to, but this might be simply due to my personal tastes, as I don’t enjoy this kind of sound. This almost sounds a bit like of an underground song from the 80’s, and for some reason making me thing a bit of Tainted Love by Soft Cell, but I’m not sure why.
I’ll give this song a 1 star rating because I would not listen to this song by choice.
Chemical by from20
Now to preface I haven’t heard much of from20’s music but what I have heard is really good so I have fairly high expectation for this song.
This is great. I love the laid back Korean rock sound and this fits perfectly into that. His voice sounds amazing over the track as well. I can definitely see this easily becoming a favourite in the future, and it’s not going to get buried within everything, since I enjoy this so much. If I’m completely honest I love it so much already but I’m holding myself back as sometimes a first listen doesn’t tell me everything and I could do a 180 on this with the second listen.
I’ll give this song a 4.5 star rating because this is amazing.
Kill Bill by SZA
I know this is an incredibly popular song and artist, but I, however, haven’t ever listened to it. I know I put this album on in the background one day but I never actually listened to it.
I’m really not a fan of the high pitched sound in the beginning and it’s a bit grating on my ears. Honestly this song is really lacking and not something I’d really listen to. There’s no satisfying end or climax to the build up, but not in a heart stopping anti-drop way, but rather in a disappointing fizzle out way.
To give one positive note on this song I do appreciate the story telling of the song and it reminds me of no body, no crime by Taylor Swift, in the way it tells a story (also of murder).
I’m giving this a 1 star rating because if it was on in the background I wouldn’t skip it, but I would not choose to listen to this song, nor would I listen to it actively.
March by SEVENTEEN
Preface: I love SEVENTEEN and haven’t heard a bad song of theirs yet so I hope this doesn’t prove me wrong.
I love the rock vibes in this song, and I’m surprised actually because I didn’t really expect it. Pleasantly surprised however because this is great. I’ve stopped writing this review simply to vibe to this song because it’s so great. Definitely a song I’ll listen to a lot. I can see this perhaps getting buried in the future among all my other songs, but I think it has an equal or higher chance of rising above everything else as well.
I’ll give this song a 4 star rating, because it pleasantly surprised me, and has a lot of potential to become a favourite in the future.
See you next time!
